Marie Kouyaté is a Black Ceramicist - a second generation American from Senegal, Guineé and Gambia. Kouyaté is a traditional Fulani name which translates to "there is a secret between you and me”. ‘Secret’ can be understood as stories, history, ancestors and identity being shared among generations. In the spirit of her Griot roots she hopes to continue the tradition of storytelling through her ceramic pieces. Her work serves to question and challenge ideas of identity, race, sexuality and memory.
